Savage Gulf
Savage Gulf is part of South Cumberland State Recreation Area, the largest wilderness park in the state. The wilderness area covers 18,000 acres in 10 separate properties located in Franklin, Marion, Grundy and Sequatchie counties.
There is more than one way to get to the Savage Gulf area. The point located on the map below shows the Stone Door Ranger Station, which can be the starting point for hikes into the wilderness area. A short trail goes to a small waterfall. Another goes to the Stone Door, a rock outcropping. From there you can hike into the gulf or follow trails along the rim.
Another entry point is the Savage Gulf Ranger Station, at 3157 Sr 399, Palmer, Tennessee.
Take Oak Ridge Turnpike/SR 58 out of town to I-40. Go west on I-40 to Exit 347/US 27. Take US 27 south 54 miles to SR 111. Turn right and go 25.7 miles to SR 399. Turn right. The Savage Gulf Ranger Station is 5.5 miles past this intersection on SR 399. To continue to the Stone Door Ranger Station, continue on SR 399 to SR 108. Continue west to SR 56. Turn right and go 10.2 miles to Beersheba Springs. Turn right at Stone Door Road and go .8 miles to the ranger station.
